While there’s no more classic a stoner problem than running out of papers — why do they only come in packs of 100!? — there’s also no more classic a stoner solution than smoking out of an apple.

Yes, the apple pipe has long been the go-to method for the ill-equipped pot smoker, and now you can rest easy knowing  you’ll soon be just a produce aisle away from preventing disaster.

What you need

The materials needed are pretty simple:

• An apple
• A nail, toothpick, or thin stick
• A pen
• Dried cannabis flower

Baking the apple

Remove the stem of the apple by twisting it off. The little nook at the top will serve as your bowl. Take the stick and push straight down through the top of the apple.

Second, take the pen and if possible remove the ink cartridge and contents inside, leaving you with a hollow plastic tube.

If you don’t have a pen, or one that you can take apart, any poker of similar size will work, but the hollow pen helps clear the useless apple (what is the fruit even for?) parts out of the way. Insert the pen into the side of the apple and push until you reach the centre. You want the narrow hole coming down to run into the larger hole.

Now, put your lips right on that apple-hole. Does air travel freely as you inhale? If not, make a few more thin holes coming from the top. But don’t go too nuts, remember, the top of the apple serves as the bowl of the pipe.

Take your grinder and bust up the cannabis into smaller pieces. Avoid grinding right into a powder though, that’ll ruin your smoke and leave you with a weird looking apple fit only for a cobbler of disappointment.

Fill the top of the apple with your cannabis, and light it up, you fruit salads.
