Quick answer
Most pre-rolls hold either 0.5 g or 1 g of ground flower. In Canada the half-gram cone is the standard size and is usually sold in packs of 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 or 20, while 1 g pre-rolls are sold singly or in pairs. A 1 g pre-roll costs about $10, and multi-packs bring the price down to roughly $6.50 to $7 a gram.
Key takeaways
- The two standard pre-roll sizes are 0.5 g and 1 g. Check the pack weight, not just the number of joints.
- On the Bud Cargo menu today, single tubes work out to $9.99 to $10.99 a gram and a 20-pack jar to $6.50 a gram.
- Loose flower is still much cheaper per gram: the median in-stock ounce is $72, about $2.57 a gram.
- Infused pre-rolls add concentrate (such as THC diamonds) to the flower, so they are priced higher and hit harder than a plain pre-roll.
- A pack of pre-rolls counts as dried cannabis toward the 30 g public possession limit in the Cannabis Act.

How many grams are in a pre-roll?
A pre-roll contains either half a gram or one full gram of flower. Those two sizes cover almost everything sold in Canada, and the weight is printed on the product name of every pre-roll pack we carry, for example “3.5 grams in Tin Can (7 x 0.5g)”.
The half-gram cone became the default because it is about what one or two people finish in a single sitting. A 1 g pre-roll is twice the flower in a longer or wider cone, which suits a group or someone who wants to relight it over a couple of sessions.
How does that compare with a hand-rolled joint?
Pre-rolls are heavier than the average joint. The most-cited estimate, from an analysis of more than 10,000 US marijuana purchases, puts the mean joint at 0.32 g (Ridgeway and Kilmer, Drug and Alcohol Dependence, 2016). So even a 0.5 g pre-roll holds more flower than a typical home-rolled joint, and a 1 g pre-roll holds about three times as much. If you roll your own, our step-by-step joint-rolling guide covers how much to grind for each size.
What pre-roll sizes and pack counts can you buy?
Pre-rolls are sold as single tubes, small multi-packs and bulk jars. The table below lists every pre-roll pack in stock at Bud Cargo on the date above, with the price per gram worked out from the pack weight.
| Pack | Pre-roll size | Total flower | Price | Per gram |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marshmallo, 1 single | 1 g | 1 g | $9.99 | $9.99 |
| Soaring Tiger, tube of 2 | 0.5 g | 1 g | $10.99 | $10.99 |
| Silver Rhino, tube of 2 | 0.5 g | 1 g | $10.99 | $10.99 |
| Cherry Lime Kiss, tube of 3 | 0.5 g | 1.5 g | $16.49 | $10.99 |
| Silver Rhino, tin of 5 | 0.5 g | 2.5 g | $22.99 | $9.20 |
| Marshmallo, tin of 5 | 0.5 g | 2.5 g | $22.99 | $9.20 |
| Soaring Tiger, tin of 7 | 0.5 g | 3.5 g | $24.79 | $7.08 |
| Mango Tango, tin of 10 | 0.5 g | 5 g | $34.99 | $7.00 |
| Slurpicane, jar of 20 | 0.5 g | 10 g | $64.99 | $6.50 |
Soaring Tiger’s 7-pack is also sold in a jar at the same price. The infused Jelly Sickle two-pack ($29.99) is left out of the per-gram column because diamond-infused pre-rolls are not priced by flower weight.
How much does a pre-roll cost in Canada?
A single 1 g pre-roll costs about $10, and the price per gram falls as the pack gets bigger. On our menu the drop is from $10.99 a gram for a two-pack to $6.50 a gram for a 20-pack jar, a 41% saving for buying in bulk.
Pre-rolls are still a convenience product, though. The same money buys far more loose flower: the median in-stock ounce deal today is $72, or about $2.57 a gram, and the cheapest is $39. You are paying the extra for the rolling, the cone and a sealed tube that travels well.

How long should a 1 g pre-roll last?
A 1 g pre-roll is usually enough for two or three people in one sitting, or for one person across two or three sessions if it is put out and relit. How long that works out to depends on tolerance and how deeply each person inhales rather than on the cone itself.
If you are new to it, a half-gram cone shared between two is a more sensible starting point than a full gram alone. Smoked cannabis comes on within minutes, so take a few puffs, wait, and then decide. Our guide to how long a cannabis high lasts compares the timing of smoking, vaping and edibles.
Can you save half a pre-roll for later?
Yes. Put it out cleanly, let it cool and store it back in its tube. The flavour of a relit joint is harsher than a fresh one, which is one reason many people prefer a pack of half-gram cones over a single gram.
What is the difference between infused and regular pre-rolls?
A regular pre-roll is ground flower in a paper cone. An infused pre-roll adds a concentrate, such as distillate, kief or THC diamonds, to the flower or the outside of the cone, which raises its potency well above what flower alone delivers.
| Regular pre-roll | Infused pre-roll | |
|---|---|---|
| Contents | Ground flower only | Flower plus a concentrate (diamonds, distillate, kief or oil) |
| Strength | Same as the flower it is made from | Noticeably stronger than the same flower on its own |
| Burn | Even, easy to relight | Can burn unevenly or run as the concentrate melts |
| Price on our menu | $6.50 to $10.99 a gram | $29.99 for the Jelly Sickle two-pack |
| Best for | Most people, sharing, value | Experienced consumers with a high tolerance |
The infused option we stock is the Jelly Sickle Diamond Infused two-pack, an indica-dominant hybrid with THC diamonds added. Moon rocks take the same idea further, and our moon rocks explainer covers how coated flower differs from a plain bud.
Are pre-rolls worth it compared with rolling your own?
Pre-rolls are worth it when convenience matters more than price. You skip the grinder, papers and rolling, every cone is the same weight, and a sealed tube is easy to carry. The trade-off is cost: buying flower and rolling it yourself costs roughly a quarter as much per gram.
Many buyers do both, keeping a jar of pre-rolls for the weekend and an ounce for everyday use. If you prefer a blunt or spliff over a standard cone, see the difference between joints, blunts and spliffs.
How many pre-rolls can you carry under Canadian law?
Pre-rolls are dried cannabis, so every gram in the pack counts toward the limit in section 8 of the Cannabis Act, which bars adults from possessing more than the equivalent of 30 g of dried cannabis in a public place. A 20-pack jar of half-gram cones is 10 g; three of those jars would be exactly 30 g.
Age limits and where you can smoke are set by each province, so check your provincial rules. Bud Cargo is a mail-order dispensary, not a provincially licensed retailer. To convert other weights, our grams-in-an-ounce chart covers eighths, quarters, halves and ounces.

Frequently asked questions
How many grams is 1 preroll?
One pre-roll is usually 0.5 g or 1 g of flower. Half-gram cones are the most common size in Canadian multi-packs; full-gram pre-rolls are usually sold singly or in pairs.
How much do pre-rolls usually weigh?
Most weigh 0.5 g or 1 g of flower, not counting the paper and filter tip. That is heavier than the average hand-rolled joint, which research puts at about 0.32 g.
How long should a 1g preroll last?
A 1 g pre-roll usually serves two or three people in one sitting, or one person over two or three sessions if it is put out and relit. Tolerance matters more than the cone.
How much is a 1g pre roll usually?
About $10. At Bud Cargo a single 1 g pre-roll is $9.99, and a tube of two half-gram pre-rolls is $10.99. Larger packs bring the price down to about $6.50 a gram.
What exactly is a pre-roll?
A pre-roll is a joint that is rolled for you: ground cannabis flower packed into a paper cone with a filter tip, sold ready to smoke in a tube, tin or jar.
Are infused pre-rolls stronger?
Yes. Infused pre-rolls add a concentrate such as THC diamonds or distillate to the flower, so they are considerably stronger than a regular pre-roll of the same size and are best left to experienced consumers.
Is it cheaper to buy pre-rolls or flower?
Flower is much cheaper. Pre-rolls on our menu cost $6.50 to $10.99 a gram, while the median in-stock ounce is $72, about $2.57 a gram.
