Quick answer
The Purple Drank strain is best known as Mr. Tusk, an indica-dominant OG Kush phenotype from Kushman Veganics that Leafly and AllBud say is commonly called Purple Drank for its grape flavour. Listed THC runs from about 15% to 22%. Other breeders use the same name for unrelated crosses. Bud Cargo stocks Purple Drank as a $75 ounce.
Key takeaways
- Leafly and AllBud both treat Purple Drank as another name for Mr. Tusk, an indica-dominant phenotype of Ken’s OG Kush grown by Kushman Veganics.

- Purple Drank Breath (Purple Punch × Mendo Breath F2) is a different strain, even though some shops mix them up.

- Bud Cargo has Purple Drank in stock as a full ounce for $75 (about $2.68 a gram).

What strain is Purple Drank?
Purple Drank is most often another name for Mr. Tusk, an indica-dominant hybrid grown by Kushman Veganics. Leafly describes Mr. Tusk as a phenotype of Ken’s OG Kush and says it has also gone by the name Purple Drank because of its flavour and aroma. AllBud goes further and says it is “more commonly called Purple Drank”.
The Mr. Tusk name has a film behind it. AllBud says the strain was created for Kevin Smith’s 2014 horror-comedy Tusk, as an OG Kush descendant. The nickname Purple Drank came later, from the grape taste, and it is the name most dispensaries now put on the jar.
Why the name causes confusion
“Purple Drank” is an old slang name for a purple soda drink, and it is a catchy name, so several breeders have used it. When Google’s AI Overview answers “purple drank strain” it now says, correctly, that multiple breeders use the name. An earlier version of this page repeated an unsourced Purple Urkle × Querkle lineage; we could not find any breeder record for that cross, so we have removed it.
Which strains are sold as Purple Drank?
At least four unrelated strains carry the Purple Drank name, plus one look-alike. Weedmaps lists the four on one page, and AllBud lists Purple Drank Breath separately:
| Strain | Breeder | Genetics | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purple Drank (aka Mr. Tusk) | Kushman Veganics | Phenotype of Ken’s OG Kush | Indica-dominant (80/20 per AllBud) |
| Purple Drank | Riot Seeds | Girl Scout Cookies (Ellie cut) × WCD710 | Mostly indica, about 56 days to flower |
| Purple Drank (auto) | 3rd Shift Genetics | Purple Lemonade × Cake Pops | Autoflowering hybrid |
| Purple Drank (auto) | Happy Bird Seeds | Black Strap R1 × (Mimosa × Orange Punch) | Autoflowering hybrid |
| Purple Drank Breath | Not listed | Purple Punch × Mendo Breath F2 | 50/50 hybrid, 23–26% THC |
The two autoflowers are seed-market strains you are unlikely to find as dried flower in Canada. In practice, an ounce sold as Purple Drank is usually either the Mr. Tusk cut or a grape-heavy phenotype a grower has given the name. Our supplier does not name a breeder for the current lot, so we describe what the flower is like rather than claim a pedigree.
Is Purple Drank an indica or sativa?
Purple Drank is indica-leaning in almost every version. AllBud lists Mr. Tusk at 80% indica and 20% sativa, Leafly calls it an “intensely potent indica-dominant hybrid”, and SeedFinder describes Riot Seeds’ version as mostly indica. The lot Bud Cargo stocks is filed as a hybrid: it starts heady and euphoric and then settles into the body.
Indica and sativa labels are a rough guide. What you feel depends far more on THC level, terpenes and how much you take than on the label.
How much THC is in Purple Drank?
Strain databases list Purple Drank at about 15% to 22% THC. Leafly gives Mr. Tusk 15% THC and 1% CBG, with myrcene as the main terpene. AllBud says Mr. Tusk reaches up to 22%. Purple Drank Breath, the different strain, is listed higher, at 23% to 26%.
Those are averages for the strain, not your batch. Bud Cargo does not publish a lab result for the current Purple Drank lot, so we do not quote a number for it. If you are new to a strain, Canada’s Lower-Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines, from the Public Health Agency of Canada, suggest choosing lower-THC products where you can.
What does Purple Drank taste and smell like?
Purple Drank tastes of grape first, which is where the name comes from. AllBud lists citrus, grape, grapefruit, herbal, spicy and sweet flavours and describes the smell as a walk between a flower garden and a spice garden with a hint of grape. Leafly’s reviewers pick out blue cheese, blueberry and grape.
The lot we stock follows that pattern: grape candy and berry syrup up front, a soft citrus twist that stops it getting cloying, and an earthy, cedar-like base underneath. Like most purple strains, its buds show deep purple through the green, which our guide to what makes cannabis purple explains.
What effects do people report from Purple Drank?
People mostly report a happy, chatty start that turns relaxed and then sleepy. Leafly’s top reported effects for Mr. Tusk are talkative, tingly and happy, with dry mouth the most reported negative. AllBud lists aroused, creative, giggly, relaxing and sleepy.
That makes it a late-afternoon or evening strain for most people, and heavier at larger amounts. This describes what consumers report, not a health claim. Start with a small amount and wait before you take more.

Frequently asked questions
Is Purple Drank an indica or sativa?
Most versions are indica-leaning. Leafly and AllBud file the best-known Purple Drank, also called Mr. Tusk, as an indica-dominant hybrid, and AllBud puts it at 80% indica and 20% sativa. Riot Seeds’ Purple Drank is also described as mostly indica. The lot Bud Cargo stocks is sold as a hybrid.
Is Purple Drank the same as Mr. Tusk?
Often, yes. Leafly says Mr. Tusk has also gone by the name Purple Drank because of its grape flavour and smell, and AllBud says the strain is more commonly called Purple Drank. But at least three other breeders sell unrelated strains under the Purple Drank name, so not every Purple Drank is Mr. Tusk.
What are the genetics of Purple Drank?
It depends on the breeder. The Kushman Veganics version (Mr. Tusk) is described as a phenotype of Ken’s OG Kush. Riot Seeds’ Purple Drank is Girl Scout Cookies (Ellie cut) × WCD710. Weedmaps also lists two autoflowers from 3rd Shift Genetics and Happy Bird Seeds. Purple Drank Breath is a separate strain: Purple Punch × Mendo Breath F2.
How much THC is in Purple Drank?
Database figures range from about 15% (Leafly, Mr. Tusk) to up to 22% (AllBud). Purple Drank Breath, a different strain, is listed at 23% to 26%. Bud Cargo does not publish a lab result for its current lot, so it does not quote one.
What does Purple Drank taste like?
Grape is the common thread. AllBud lists citrus, grape, grapefruit, herbal, spicy and sweet; Leafly’s top flavours are blue cheese, blueberry and grape. The lot Bud Cargo stocks leads with grape candy and berry syrup, a soft citrus twist and an earthy, cedar-like base.
What kind of strain is purple?
A purple strain is one whose buds turn purple, usually because of anthocyanin pigments that show when the plant’s genetics and cool night temperatures allow it. Many purple strains, including Purple Kush, Granddaddy Purple and Purple Punch, are indica-leaning, but colour alone does not tell you potency or effect.
How much is an ounce of Purple Drank?
At Bud Cargo a full ounce (28 g) of Purple Drank is $75 as of 20 October 2026, about $2.68 a gram. That is the median price of the 54 ounce deals in stock today.
